Stolen, between 1 a.m. and 9 a.m. of tbe 18th September, from a bedroom in the Empire Hotel, Half-way Township, one twenty pound note, Bank of New Zealand, No. 31; the property of William Robinson. A man named David Hill Bell is suspected of being the offender, he having slept in the same room. He is an Englishman about 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high ; light sandy whiskers and moustache, grey eyes, full round features, and stout build ; dressed in dark tweed sac coat, dark trousers, and black felt hat: was employed as billiard-marker at the hotel.

Stolen, during the month of August, from the dwelling of Reginald Eane, Havelock Hotel, Hokitika, one double-cased silver watch, number and maker’s name unknown; and one open-faced silver lever watch, No, 6235, maker’s name unknown ; the latter watch identifiable. No one suspected in particular.

Stolen, between 7 and 8 o’clock, p.m., sth ultimo, at Sea Beach, from a vest pocket which was placed on the ground along with a coat during a fight between George Clements, of the Diggers’ Arms Hotel, Hokitika, and one Kirby of the Shamrock Hotel, Sea Beach, a gold lever watch, with gold dial; No. and maker’s name unknown: one gold albert chain, with gold locket containing two portraits ; one gold ring, with clasp on the back for the purpose of opening it, with the letters E.C. engraved on the inside; and one business license in the name of George Clements: all the property of George Clements, and identifiable.

Stolen, between 8 and 10'30 o’clock, p.m., from a dressing-room in the Prince of Wales Opera-house, Hokitika, a pocket-book containing seven one pound notes, banks or numbers unknown ; some silver coins, a gold ring, jewelled ; a ladies’ lace handkerchief; a paste shoe-buckle, set with silver and gold ; and some papers; the property of Mr. J. H. Allen, Comedian. Suspicion is attached to a man named J. Stephenson, who was attending upon Mr. Allen as dresser, and being the only person having any business in the room. Pie is an Englishman, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high; black hair, fair complexion, no whiskers, wears a tuft of hair on the chin ; dressed in dark clothes, and black cloth cap. Is still in Hokitika.

Stolen, from the person of John Eoley, of Longbeach, while in a state of intoxication, on the night of the Btb ult., 11 one pound notes and one five pound note, bank and numbers unknown. Suspicion attached to no person in particular.

Stolen, about 9.30, p.m., of the 10th ultimo, from the bar of the White House Hotel, Sea Beach, Stafford Hill, a cash box, containing five one pound notes, Nos. and banks unknown; two sovereigns, and about three pound in silver. The cash box and one of the notes can be identified, the note having a peice torn off one corner. No person suspected in particular.

Stolen, from the person of Michael Boyden, while sleeping in the billiard-room of the Welcome Inn, Stafford Hill, between 3 and six o’clock, a.m. of the 14th ult., a white cotton handkerchief, containing four one pound notes, Nos. and banks unknown, one

sovereign, two half-sovereigns, and about £3 18s. 6d. in silver. A man named Martin Connor is suspected of being the offender, he being the only person sleeping in the same room. He is an Irishman, about 35 years of age ; 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build; black hair, whiskers and moustache; dressed in black coat and trousers, watertight boots and black cap. Connor was searched immediately after the case was reported, but none of the missing money found upon him.

Stolen, on the 13th ult., from a tent at Sea Beach, Stafford Hill, during the absence of the owner, Hector Jenkins, the following articles: —Four one pound notes, Nos. not known, supposed to be Bank of New Zealand; one oppossum skin rug, nearly new, size, 7 feet by 6 ; one new light tweed Crimean shirt; one old plaid shirt, one white flannel shirt, and one pair of old moleskin trousers. The tent of “ Hobart Town Jack” and mates searched, but no traces found of missing property.

Stolen, from the person of Charles William Johnston, Greymouth, while in a state of intoxication on the evening of the 15th ult, a silver geneva watch, having the words “ Jewelled in eight holes ” engraved on inside of back, maker’s name unknown ; one halfsovereign and some silver. Johnston had been in several dancing saloons and the Alliance Hotel during the evening.

Stolen, between 8 and 9 p.m., from the outside of James McDowell’s store, Greymouth, a black waterproof coat, marked YZ on inside of back. Identifiable.

Stolen, between the 10th and 18th August, from a case while on transit from Sandridge, Victoria, to Hokitika on board the steamer Gothenburg, 33 pairs mens’ elastic sided tops or uppers for boots; one pair womens’ elastic sided uppers, patent leather toes ; one and a half yards elastic web, one pair AVellington boots, nailed; one pair watertight boots, one pair women’s boots, rivetted, and one pair of Napoleon boots, sprigged. The property of Henry Parker, Revell-street west, Hokitika.

Stolen, between the hours of 11.30, p.m., of the 19th and 3, a.m. of the 20th ult, from the person of John Wiley, bootmaker, Hokitika, while sleeping in a state of intoxication on the beach, a gold lever open-faced watch, gold dial, 3W engraved in writing on the back of case, slight dent on back and edge of case, and a slight English made albert chain, with key broken off. Identifiable.

Stolen, at 4.30, p.m., of the 21st ult., from George Dalrymple, Hokitika, a black and tan English terrier bitch, about eight wmeks’ old, all the feet white. Immediately after missing the dog Mr. Dalrymple returned to look for it, and meeting four men whom he had passed a short time previous he enquired of them if they had seen it, upon wdiich one of the men struck him, at the same time saying “ do you think I stole your dog ?” No description can be given of any of the men.

Between 7.30, p.m., and 10, p.m., of the 23rd ult., the store of Messrs. J. and E. Paul, Greymouth, was broken into, and a cash-box, containing the following property, stolen: —One cheque for £4O, drawn by Stett, brothers in favour of J. and E. Paul, on the Bank of New Zealand ; six one pound notes, three

shillings in silver, two penny peices, and a bill of sale in favour of J. and E. Paul on the property o± John Black, Little Grey. A man named James Quinn, formerly employed in the store, is suspected. He is an Irishman, 35 years old ; 5 feet 0 inches high, medium build; regular features, light brown hair, small whiskers and no moustache. The person and premises of Quinn have been searched by tae Police without finding any of the property.

Stolen, between 6 and 7, p.m., of the 2Gth ult., from the door of Simpson’s Boarding-house, Timaru, a horse with saddle and bridle on. The horse was found three hours afterwards standing at the door of the Timaru stables without saddle or bridle._ The saddle is nearly new, of colonial make; low in the seat, with high eantle; off spring-bar for stirrupleather partly broken, off knee-pad more worn than near one ; stirrup-irons, leathers, and girths attached. One new bridle with Pelham bit ring on near side, more rough and clumsy in make than the other one ; double reins, slightly stained with spots of blood; and an old martingale and breast-plate. The property of William Kirland. Identifiable.

Stolen, during the night of the 26th ult., from the person of Michael Manix, while intoxicated and asleep in the Dunstan Hotel, Boss, a black leather purse, containing two gold nuggets, weighing respectively three ozs. eight dwts. 23 grs., and one oz. 15 dwts. 14 grs., and four one pound notes ; the larger nugget about one inch in length, of an oblong shape, having an indent in the middle, as if by a stroke -of a peck. A man named John Dempsey is suspeeted of being the offender, he having occupied the same room : —is about 37 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, medium build ; dark brown hair, whiskers and moustache, inclined to baldness on top of head ; w r ore grey turned trousers, grey sac coat, light coloured felt hat with black ribbon, and Wellington boots. Supposed to have gone to Hokitika.

Stolen, between 7 and 8 o’clock, a.m., of 29th ult, from the dwelling of Donald McMullen, Waimea Track, a black morocco leather folding purse, containing £24, viz., four five pound notes and four one pound notes, banks and Kos. unknown; a deposit receipt for £llO in Union Bank of Australia at Hokitika; a miners’ right in McMullin’s name ; and some other mining documents. All identifiable except the money.

Stolen, between 5, p.m., and 10, p.m., from the store of Messrs. Cullen and Byan, Pipers Elat, Stafford Hill Diggings, a chamois leather bag, containing about 30 ozs. gold—value £ll4. The gold can be identified, through some iron-sand, melted into small round particles like small shot of a white colour, being mixed with the gold. Ho person in particular suspected.
