PLANS FOR BROIEDAME AVONDALE MEETING AHEAD STRONG TE RAPA ENTRY (By “Martian”) Fortune’s Smile appears among the entries for the King George Handicap to be run at Ellerslie on Saturday week and a line through his fine showing in the J? 1 * 6 . a_ Half Pearce Handicap at Irentham on Labour Day would suggest excellent prospects for this genuine member of Archie McGregor's stable. Earlier Fortune s Smile had won over a mile at the Poverty Bay fixture at Te Aroha and his forward running in the Pearce indicated that he should win good distance races in the current term. Sir Standfast Sir Standfast may contest the open sprint at the Avondale Jockey Club's second spring meeting at Ellreslie and his winning performance at Cambridge on Labour Day points to the Mr Standfast gelding giving another solid account of himself. Admittedly it was his first success for two years but it looks as if Cobb has got him right again and he may reproduce in the months ahead the consistent form that encouraged the Hamilton sportsman, Mr A. W. Ebbett to acquire him at a substantial figure after his sprint success at Cambridge in 1943. Prospects of Black Beret Black Beret has shown a marked partiality for the Ellerslie track in the past and if he is produced among the sprinters at the Avondale meeting on Saturday week he will have a generous following. His three starts this season have produced a win and a fourth placing, the former being at the Avondale meeting when he won the Flving Handicap from Royal Master and Peter Gregor and the fourth being in the sevenfurlong Shorts . Handicao at the last Auckland meeting when his prospects were settle J through being checked in the running. With 7.12 he reads nicely placed in the Electric Handicap next month. Should Win Again Provided Gay Lally gets a firm track at Ellerslie next month for the Avondale meeting he should be hard to beat again. His success in the Flying Mile at Ellerslie on October 13 was one of the most impressive of the day and justified the confidence of his connections that his prior disappointing form was not a true indication of his capabilities. It was the first time for a considerable spell that he was racing on a firm track and he gave ample evidence just how much he appreciated the changed conditions. Auckland reports credit him with doing well in the interim and he should be a fit horse when the Members' Handicap comes up for decision on Saturday week. Royal Master Consistent Consistency should soon have its reward in the case of Royal Master, runnerup to Black Beret in the Flying Handicap at Ellerslie on September 8 and fifth in the seven-furlong Shorts Handicap at the last Auckland meeting. On both occasions Royal Master was finishing on and on that latter occasion he would probably have been closer up at the finish but for being badly placed in the early stages of the running. The Mr Standfast gelding failed to win outright last season but appears to have come more solid with age. He may win a race shortly and will have an opportunity in the Members’ Handicap at the Avondale meeting on Saturday week. Sire For Hunt Club The Manawatu Hunt Club is importing a 10-year-old sire from England with the object of improving the breed of hunters in the Manawatu district. It is hoped that he will be available to breeders for next covering season. The animal selected is by Solario from Maralga, by Friar Marcus from Alga, by Merman from Tutti Frutti, by Persimmon from New Zealand, by Isonomy from Australia, by Young Melbourne. New Zealand was second dam of the Hardwicke Stakes winner Lancaster, and forth dam of the Oaks and Goodwood Cup winner Brulette. This is the Peppermint branch of the No 1 family which produced Rockingham, winner of the St. Ledger, Goodwood Cup and Lancaster Cup; The Barb, winner of the Goodwood Cup and Lancaster Cup; and the successful racehorse and sire Hotweed. Maralga, dam of the importation, won three races and was dam of four winners. Bought At The Sales Robin’s Reward, winner at his first start in the Nursery Handicap at the Waverley meeting on Labour Day, is a chestnut colt by Robin Goodfellow from Rapt, and was bred by Mr J. J. Barry, Inglewood. The colt was bought by Mr F. H. Walker, Hawera, for 435 guineas at the National Sales in January. He is a half-brother to Deliberate, who won nine rai.in Australia, and the winners Bantry, Rapper and Fafner. The dam Rapt, who never raced, is half-sister to La Justice (winner of the Maribyrong Plate) and to Palagia (dam of Foxhaven),and traces to Neva, sister to Droski, the second dam of Alma, Travenna, Ventrac, Amy Johnson and Boloyna. Grand Rapids. Limerick, Ballymena, Aborigine, Cherubini and Danube came from this branch of the family. Mid-Week Racing A recent meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Owners, Trainers and Breeders’ Association urged an early return to mid-week racing. Several members drew attention to the additional expense entailed in having to attend meetings extending from Saturday to Saturday. Plans for Colonel Vaals Colonel Vaals is entered for the Avondale meeting on Saturday week and interest will attach to his progress at Te Rapa in the next fortnight. He failed at his last appearance—the open mile at Ellerslie—but he should not be readily discarded because of that disappointing form. He was the unlucky horse of the open mile at the Poverty Bay meeting at Te Aroha, being checked in the running and having to make his run on the outside of several horses at the turn. He finished on solidly in the straight to get to within half-a-length of Fortune’s Smile and one got the impression that he would have turned the tables on the other Te Rapa horse had he received anything like a decent run. Broiedame in Form The Broiefort mare Broiedame has been racing consistently of late and she will not lack support if produced in the King George Handicap at the Avondale meeting on Saturday week. Following her useful third to Fortune's Smile and Colonel Vaals at Te Aroha she gave another fine performance to run Sir Bian to three parts of a length in the Mitchelson Cup after being one of the leaders throughout. She is still handily placed in the weights and with 7.10 should account for more than beat her in the King George Handicap at the approaching Avondale fixture. Balmacara’s First Win It was at the Waikato Racing Club's spring meeting a year ago that Balmacara. early favourite for the Waikato Guineas, made his racetrack debut. Starting at good odds in the first division of the Tamanere Stakes, he registered an end-to-end win from Balmore, who has since achieved success in Australia. White Blaze, who is also entered for the Waikato Guineas ran third while another guineas entry. Goody Two Shoes finished well up In the race. In the second division, won by Majestic from Landfire, Beau Martian, who is engaged in this year's guineas ran third, while other entries for this year's race who started in this division included Alnajo and Diatomous Girl. Plans for Typhoon A Melbourne cable message today states that Typhoon can now be considered a probable starter in the Melbourne Cup. The gelding's owner, Mr A. Preston, arrived from New Zealand yesterdav and conferred with the trainer, C. Stowe. Later Mr Preston said Typhoon would start in the Cantala Stakes, one mile, at Flemington on Saturday, and if his form was satisfactory he would start in the Cup. Won at Te Aroha Baby Girl, who has been nominated for the seven-furlong Three Kings Hack at the approaching Avondale meeting, won stylishly at the Poverty Bay meeting at Te Aroha but it was bad luck for her connections that she should have been bracketed with the well-supported Peggy 'O. On that running she should go on to further success and will not be overlooked the next time she is produced in public. Plans for Foxwyn Foxwyn is moving along steadily in his preparation at Te Rapa and looks all the better for his run among the sprinters at the recent Auckland meeting. He aD- ' pears among the weights for the big j handicap at the Avondale meeting next i month and interest will attach to his ! showing in view of plans to attempt this year a repetition of his Auckland Cup success of last season.
