ILLEGAL LANDINGS JEWISH IMMIGRANTS WARNING IN MESSAGE LONDON, Oct. 3 A large number of Jewish immigrants are illegally landing in Palestine, according to Tewfik Salen Husseini, acting-chairman of the Palestine Arab Party, says a report from Jerusalem The landings are reported to be occurring under cover of armed Jewish forces specially trained for the purpose. The British cruiser Sirius and the destroyer Haydon are anchored off Jaffa. A message from Bombay says the president of the Moslem League, Mr Jinnah, in a cablegram to Mr Attlee, said: “President Truman’s reported Palestine immigration proposal is an unwarranted encroachment upon another country. It is monstrous and highly unjust. Any departure from the White Paper and Britain’s pledges will be not only a flagrant breach of faith with Moslem India, but an acid test of British honour. Vehemently Resisted “It is my duty to inform you,” added Mr Jinnah, “that any surrender to appease Jewry at the expense of the Arabs would be deeply resented and vehemently resisted by Moslem India.” The statement has been made in London that Mr Attlee’s communication to President Truman on September 16, in reply to the latter’s letter on the entry of Jews into Palestine, was made by cablegram and not by letter, as was thought earlier. It is reported from the White House that another cablegram was received from Mr Attlee yesterday. The British cruiser Sirius and the destroyer Haydon anchored off Jaffa and Tel-Aviv on Monday, states the Daily Telegraph’s Jerusalem correspondent. The Sirius is the flagship of Vice-Admiral Tennant, flag officer in the Levant and Eastern Mediterranean, who is in Jerusalem for consultations with Lord Gort. Critical Days Faced The statement issued by Tewfik Salen Husseini, indicating that large numbers of Jewish immigrants were reaching Palestine illegally said: “The Palestine case faces its most critical days and any postponement of solution of the problem further increases the danger to the Arabs. Jewish immigration, particularly illict land transfers, continue alarmingly. We appeal for help to implement the Arab demands for immediate and permanent suspension of Jewish immigration and land sales, and a declaration of the independence of Palestine. Any solution not implementing the Arab demands will threaten the peace and tranquility of Palestine and the Arab countries.” It has been felt for some time, says the correspondent, that the British Government is not prepared at this stage to depart at any length from the White Paper policy. Such immigration as is contemplated would merely extend the White Paper quota, which was exhausted with the 75,000 Jews admitted during the war. The fact that the Government has just offered and the Jewish agency firmly rejected one month’s quota of 1500, although perhaps intended as a stop-gap, is regarded as indicative of the figure the Government regards as unlikely to provoke Arab opposition. We must work together and understand each other.”
