ANOTHER REBUKE

ACTION BY MAYOR MR R. BRAITHWAITE CRITICISED A member of the Hamilton Borough Council, Mr R. Braithwaite, was again rebuked by the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, at a meeting of the council last night, A fortnight ago the action of Mr Braithwaite in discussing certain information relating to milk supply when, addressing a public meeting at Frankton was criticised by the Mayor. During a long discussion on a notice of motion lodged by Mr Braithwaite advocating the rescission of a previous resolution providing for the erection of 13 blocks of flats, Mr Caro quoted from a newspaper clipping in which Mr Braithwaite had expressed his opinions regarding the matter. “Once again I must take Mr Braithwaite to task over discussing these things before coming to the council,” said the Mayor. He maintained that a councillor must give the council a chance to hear his views before he aired them in the press. Replying later to the Mayor’s re-buke,-Mr Braithwaite said he wished to express amazement that a member of the council was not free to give his views on any subject to the press. “I am not going to break any rules of the council as far as I know them,” said Mr Braithwaite. "You should remember that councillors have certain rights. I will discuss public affairs in the press or on the platform whenever I consider right.”
