BRITISH LABOUR PARTY STATEMENTS BY LASKI PRESSURE ON SPAIN (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. CopyrlftU) (Received Aug. 18, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 17 “The British Labour Government will if necessary bring economic pressure to bear on Spain in order to allow Spain to realise the political unity of the republican forces in the coalition Government and to organise the election of Parliament,” said Professor Laski in an interview with the weekly newspaper La Tribune Economique. quoted by Reuter’s Paris correspondent. “It is our intention to give the new Italy, if it is democratic, full assistance in the economic field and all our help in matters of foreign policy,” said Professor Laski. We will give France all our help and friendship. I foresee a mixed FrancoBritish committee which would allow discussions interesting to both countries.” Professor Laski said the Labour Party counted on sending a delegation to Russia with a mission to propose full political and economic unity of the working classes, but this implied the disappearance of separate secret organisations within the workers’ parties. Relations with America He hoped that British relations with America would continue under the sign of friendship, which would largely depend on the attitude of American finance toward the Socialist experiment in Britain. Defining the Labour Party’s attitude to Germany, Professor Laski said it would be based on the Potsdam decisions and on the gradual restoration of German democracy. He added that the problem was roughly the same for Japan. “We must destroy the economic mystic foundations of Japanese militarism. We must prevent the birth in the Far East of economic strategic imperialism to the advantage of any single power. The Chinese have the right to be masters in their own home. We must also protect the people against the semi-Fascist forces of the Chinese right-wing ” PURGE OF OFFICIALS BRITISH IN HAMBURG 2710 PERSONS ARRESTED (Received August 18, 1 p.m.) HAMBURG, Aug. 17 The Military Government announced that 2710 officials had been arrested in the city in a purge aimed at eradicating Nazism from every section of Government life. The purge began last May when British officials raided a city council meeting and arrested 28 officials, including the Burgomaster, of the 40 present. The police- department received special attention, 300 being removed. The British arrested 164 teachers of the Education Department. A Vienna message says the new people’s court sentenced to death three Nazis accused of shooting 102 Hungarian Jews during the death march. The accused were Rudolf Kronberger, butcher, Alois Frank, cook, and William Neuteufel, painter. They were guards when the notorious Engerau camp was evacuated, and shot the Jews who, weak from hunger and fatigue, fell out of the marching column. NEW ARMY FOR HOLLAND GUERILLA TACTICS LEARNED (Received August 18, 1 p.m.) LONDON, Aug 17 Dutch expeditionary forces will be trained in England in the art of coping with guerillas, to form the nucleus of the Dutch army, says Reuter’s Hague correspondent. Eight thousand light infantry will leave later. Twenty thousand volunteers will leave Holland for England in December. CHARTER RATIFIED FRENCH GOVERNMENT (Received August 18, 1 p.m.) PARIS, Aug. 17 The French Government has ratified the San Francisco Charter. The speed with which France has taken the decision testifies to the Government’s desire to play an active part in the organisation of world peace within the framework of collective security,. IMPERIAL RESCRIPT LAYING DOWN OF ARMS NEW YORK, Aug. 17 The Tokyo radio says that Emperor Hirohito has issued an Imperial Rescript calling on the Army and Navy to lay down arms. The Rescript instructs officers and men of the Japanese armed forces to maintain solid unity and strict discipline in their movements. It lauds the fighting services for their unstinting loyalty and bravery, and added: “However, with the Soviet entry into the war, and in view of the domestic and foreign situation, the ruler declared that, in spite of the fact that the Army and Navy fighting spirit remains undiminished, he sued for peace to avoid further needless disaster.” The Emperor paid a tribute to the war dead and exhorted the warriors to unite toward rebuilding the nation. The Associated Press points out that the Rescript is weightier than the order which the Emperor used previously to direct the forces to cease hostilities. FRONTIER AGREEMENT RUSSIA AND POLAND LONDON, Aug. 17 Russia and Poland have signed a frontier delimitation agreement, says the Moscow radio. The agreement established the Curzon Line as the Russian-Polish frontier, except for a few deviations in Poland’s favour. The radio added that Russia and Poland also have signed a reparations agreement in accordance ’with the Potsdam Conference agreement. In addition, Russia has agreed to concede to Poland 15 per cent of all reparations delivered from the Soviet zone of occupation in Germany, and also 15 per cent of the industrial equipment Russia received from the Western zones.
