ORDERLY BEHAVIOUR

ONLY ONE PROSECUTION The view that celebrations in Hamilton were conducted in an orderly manner was endorsed by Senior-Ser-geant H. F. Coddington today. He said that aoart from one incident which had its sequel in a prosecution the police received no complaints of damage to property. Charged with damaging telephone equipment owned by the Post and Telegraph Department and leased by a taxi company, Robert McDowell, aged 25, farm labourer, of Otorohanga, pleaded guilty when he appeared before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, today. Senior-Sergeant Coddington said that defendant and two companions were in a telephone box when several Maoris attempted to enter. A struggle ensued, as a result of which the earpiece and a length of cord were broken. They were later found in defendant’s possession in a car. Defendant said that he had unconsciously placed the earpiece and cord in the car. He had not been before the Court previously. There was no intention of theft.

The magistrate said he would not enter a conviction. Defendant was discharged without penalty under the Offenders Probation Act, being ordered to pay £2 damages.
