LAWN CEMETERY

DEVELOPMENT APPROVED TREE PLANTING PROPOSALS The development of the lawn cemetery at Hamilton East Is not being neglected by the Hamilton. Borough Council. This was indicated at a meeting last night when the chairman of the works committee, Mr W. R. Shattock, and Mr M. M. Shaw were authorised to attend to certain and tree planting. They will act in' conjunction with the borough engineer and will report back to the council. , The value of the lawn cemetery was stressed by Mr Shattock. He said it would not only be tidier than the old cemetery but would also be less expensive to the council in. maintenance. The council approved suggestions' submitted by Mr W H.. Paul and the borough engineer, Mr A. W. Bettany. It was considered that the existing high lawsoniana hedge, properly trimmed, together with the young lawsoniana hedge, when it had developed more growth, would constitute a valuable background for th» lawn area as a whole, and for this njason it was desirable to encourage the development of the young hedge as far as possible. Avenue Of Trees The main feature of the planting should take the form of an avenue of trees flanking the main drive, about 7ft. 6in. back from the kerb and spaced about *32 feet apart. It was felt that native trees could be used to considerable advantage provided hardy types were chosen. Mr Paul recommended totaras in this connection. It was not considered desirable that isolated trees be placed within the block at present in use or in the smaller one opposite, but their use could be considered a little later in connection with the two largest blocks. Park seats and two or three flower beds could, however, be used to advantage.
