PROPERTY NEGLECTED
♦ FAILURE TO CLEAR RAGWORT ’ “This is the worst case in my experience in regard to the neglect of a property and the growth of ragwort,” said Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, yesterday when fining Anthony Petrie £2O for failing to destroy noxious weeds. The prosecution was brought by the Waipa County Council and was conducted by its noxious weeds inspector, Mr G. M. Wall. Petrie entered a plea of not guilty. Mr Wall said defendant owned 105 acres of unimproved peat land on the eastern side of the Monavale swamp but did not live on the property. On January 22 a notice had been sent to him advising him that he must clear the property of ragwort. However, Petrie took no action. The weed was spreading on to neighbouring farms. The magistrate pointed out that a landowner must keep his property clear of noxious weed. There was no excuse for failure.
