4,000,000 PRISONERS
BRITISH AND AMERICANS 100 DIVISIONS DESTROYED (Official Wireless) (Received May 16. 12.15 p.m.) RUGBY, May 15 Over 4,000,000 Germans had been made prisoners by the British and Americans since the battle of Alamein, said the Sec- ' retary of State for War, Sir James Grigg, in the House of Commons. From November, 1942 to April, 1945, they totally destroyed approximately 100 German Divisions. The number of divisions they engaged or tied down during this period varied considerably. In January, 1945, it was more than 120. It was estimated at the beginning of this year that 180,000 British Commonwealth prisoners were in German hands. By May 14, 116,000 had been evacuated from the area controlled by Supreme Command. Aboul 1000 came from Italy and about 4000 through Odessa. Reports were awaited of the numbers of Allied prisoners liberated by the Soviet forces. One hundred American Flying Fortresses today flew about 3000 Allied prisoners of war from Germany.
