TONIGHT’S PROGRAMMES CIVIC THEATRE As fine a display of acting as has graced the screen in recent years is given by Jennifer Jones in “ The Song of Bernadette.” which will conclude its Hamilton season tonight. With simplicity and beauty she plays the exquisite character of a French peasant girl who transformed the lives of thousands with her faith when she was granted the shining vision of a “ Beautiful Lady.” Charles Bickford gives a vigorous portrayal as the Dean of Lourdes and Gladys Cooper is felicitously cast as an embittered nun. STATE THEATRE Two women ranch owners, rivals in love, motivate the plot of R.K.0.-Radio’s new and thrilling drama of the old West, ” Tall In The Saddle,” starring John Wayne and Ella Raines. Wayne plays a tall and tough ranch foreman with an aversion for women. When he takes over a new job, he finds the owner of the ranch has been mysteriously murdered and the ranch has passed on to a woman. He refuses to work for a woman, so takes a iob at a neighbouring ranch—only to find that too is owned by a woman. From then on the action is fast and thrilling, punctuated with gun battles, fist fights and hard riding. “My Pal Wolf ” will commence a season with a special matinee tomorrow. The associate feature is ” Hail to the Rangers.” THE ROYAL l Dramatic suspense leavened with Tommy Trinder's inimitable humour is provided in the British Empire Films production, ” The Bells Go Down,” the story of how an auxiliaiy fire service unit in the East End of London made good. . The unit includes a kennelman (Tommy Trinder), a petty dockside thief (Mervyn Johns) and other unpromising mate'ial who in the terrific blitz of September. 1940, are forged into a band of heroes and comrades The scenes of London’s travail during the height of the aerial onslaught are very effective and the dramatic tension has been well maintained. The weekend programme comprises “ You Can’t Ration Love ” and “ Twilight On The Prairie.” ROXY THEATRE A moving picture of peasant resistance to the Nazis is presented in “ Undercover,” a story of the Yugoslav guerillas during some of the grimmest days of the European war. That lovely Gloria Jean has grown into a charming, extremely personable young lady is shown by her performance as the rebellious granddaughter of a wealthy chain-store owner in Universal's gay musical, ” Reckless Age.” Comedy in the best traditions is provided by Bud Abbott and Lou Costello in their latest starring vehicle. “In Society,” which will be shown with “ Submarine Base ” tomorrow. A special Victory matinee will be screened on Saturday at 2 p.m. REGENT THEATRE A remarkable exploit of the war at sea, an exploit that takes a proud place in British naval history, is the dramatic and convincing inspiration of ” San Demetrio, London,” which will conclude a successful season today. The San Demetrio was a British tanker which was attacked by the Admiral Scheer in the North Atlantic in November, 1940. The crew take to the boats and from then on excitement mounts in intensity as one party reboards the vessel, preferring to risk her blowing up rather than remaining in the lifeboat and dying from cold and exhaustion. The technicolour special “ Cobra Woman,” with Maria Montez, Jon Hall and Sabu, will be screened tomorrow.
