AUSTRALIAN BANKS
NO INTERFERENCE INTENDED CANBERRA, Nov. 23 No interference with the normal business practice of banks or with funds held for advances to customers was intended by the Commonwealth Government, said the AssistantTreasurer, Mr H. P. Lazzarini, today. He was commenting on a statement in a circular issued by the banks that, without consideration for the views of those who wished to borrow, the Government might assume the right for all time to investigate each application for an overdraft and veto those which it did not approve. Such statements, said the Minister, were “deliberately calculated to mislead.” Whatever the Commonwealth Government did about banking in the immediate future, its proposals were concerned only with the control of banks and not with details of management. The Government had no intention of interfering with bank deposits. !
