VETERINARY SCHOOL

NEED IN DOMINION STAFFING AND EQUIPMENT The New Zealand Veterinary Association, at its 21st annual conference in Hamilton, discussed the need for a properly-equipped veterinary school in the Dominion. The following resolution was carried: “In view of the heavy capital and annual cost, the scarcity of building materials and suitable staff, and the present satisfactory arrangements with Sydney, consideration of a veterinary school in New Zealand should be deferred until it is clearly established that New Zealand intends to employ immediately at least 250 veterinarians, requiring an annual output of approximately nine graduates. This is probably the minimum number of students required for the maintenance of a satisfactory school. If and when consideration is given to the establishment of a veterinary school in New Zealand, the primary consideration should be the efficient training of veterinarians. Consequently the Veterinary Association should resolutely oppose any suggestion of establishing a veterinary school that is not adequately housed, properly equipped, and above all staffed by men of the highest calibre.”
