GREATER HAMILTON MOVEMENT

The drafting of a definite programme of action by the Greater Hamilton Society will be awaited with interest. The organisation has disclosed the extraordinary complexity of public bodies in the town. It is reported that between 50 and 60 organisations have expressed their intention to join the comprehensive society, and this does not exhaust the list. Generally the objective is to concentrate the weight of all these bodies upon any objective, which the society considers worthy of support. Its total strength is impressive and if its objectives are wisely chosen the society should become a useful instrument for the public benefit. Hamilton is capable of much greater expansion industrially and culturally. It certainly has suffered no dearth of organisations, but there has been a pursuit of individual aims rather than a community concentration upon wider objectives—apart from the administration of the Borough Council. The society is to be composed of delegates from the numerous organisations. Some care will be necessary to ensure there is no overlapping of the functions of such bodies as the Borough Council, but it will no doubt be found there is an ample field for work of decided value to the community. While the war lasts there will be need for combined effort in the general direction of raising funds, providing relief where it is needed and sustaining the morale of the people. And in the expansive days of peace following victory there will be unlimited opportunities for the advancement of the town and district. As a demonstration of civic spirit the formation of the society is a healthy sign.
