LIQUOR CHARGES
MAGISTRATE INFLICTS FINES
Charges of aiding and assisting the offence of supplying liquor to natives for consumption off licensed premises in a proclaimed area were preferred against William Waitai, Kehi Gregory and Steve White, all of Karapiro, in the? Magistrate’s Court, *Hamilton, today. The defendants were further charged with having wine in their possession in the vicinity of the Regent dance hall on September 23.
Waikai and Gregory were not present in court but White appeared and pleaded guilty on both charges. Constable A. Pennell said that at 8.40 p.m. on September 23, he was on duty near the Regent dance hall. He saw the three defendants in an alleyway near the building with a bottle of wine in their possession. All were three-quarter caste Maoris. Gregoiy stated that he had bought the wine from a friend at Karapiro but it was later found that he supplied the liquor himself. The magistrate, Mr S. L. Paterson, fined the three men £2 10s and £5 respectively on the two charges. Paul King, of Orini, was fined £2 10s when he appeared on a charge of aiding the supply of liquor to a native for consumption off licensed premises. Constable W. Walters said that at 7.10 p.m., on November 1 he saw defendant in Victoria Street with a bottle of beer, which he was drinking. He admitted being a Maori. The magistrate dismissed a charge against Kenneth William McAllister (Mr A. L. Tompkins) of supplying the beer to King. It was stated that McAllister was in King’s company when Constable Walters approached King.
