MANY NEW MEMBERS

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CAMPAIGN’S EARLY SUCCESS A successful opening to the campaign to secure additional membership was reported by Mr E. Runnerstrum at the monthly meeting of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce today. Speaking of the publicity committee’s activities, Mr Runnerstrum said that after one week only there had been 45 new members enrolled. It was anticipated that before the campaign closed on Der/imber 15 the total of new members would reach 100. The meeting officially admitted Jhe names submitted as new members. Mr W. S. Morrison reported on the work of the rehabilitation committee of the chamber and mentioned that the questionnaire which was being prepared for submission to business people in the town would be on hand tomorrow.

The chairman, Mr A. O. Svenson, commented that he was very pleased with the work of the committee.

It was decided that an open council meeting should be held on November 13 for discussion of the 17 remits to come before the annual conference in Palmerston North on Nov-ember 22. In the meantime copies of the remits would be circulated to all members. Broadcasting Station?

The view that strong claims for a broadcasting station in Hamilton should be advanced by people of the town and surrounding district was expressed by members. The question was referred to the publicity committee to arrange a suitable approach to the various public bodies in Hamilton and the district. Steps taken to obtain a broadcasting station in Hamilton dated back to 1941, when the chamber was told that the matter would receive immediate attention after the war, said the secretary, Mr G. A. Acres. The latest reply to the chamber’s inquiries was not so satisfactory. The Minister of Broadcasting had stated that there were many districts with prior claims to those of Hamilton.

Mr Svenson said he was personally of the opinion that there should be a station of the commercial division in Hamilton. In relation to Palmerston North, which had a commercial station, Hamilton had been neglected. In density the farming population around Hajiilton was considerably greater than that surrounding Palmerston North and there was little difference in the sizes of the towns. There was a need for immediate action in following up the matter.. Members present were Messrs A O. Svenson (chairman), W. S. Morrison, J. D. Edgecombe, R. Braithwaite, C. G. Bradley, C. B. Prisk, E. Runnerstrum, H. C. M. Norris, A. R. Tumwald, H. J. Hill, R. L. McCheane, A. Sorby and A. J. Yendell, with the secretary, Mr G. A. Acres.
