MEASURE OF AGREEMENT

DUMBARTON OAKS CONFERENCE WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 “The conservations among British, American and Russian delegations at Washington regarding the establishment of a world security organisation have been completed,” says a joint statement. “These conversations have been most useful and led to a large measure of agreement on recommendations for the general framework of the organisation, particularly for the machinery required to maintain peace and security*” The three delegations will report to tfreir respective Governments, which will consider the reports and in due course issue simultaneous statements.

The State Department revealed that Mr Edward Stettinius in his closing speech said, “We have every reason for satisfaction with what was accomplished. We developed a wide area of agreement on fundamental and necessary principles for an international organisation to maintain peace and security.” M. Gromyko (Russia) expressed appreciation of the friendly atmosphere and said the conversations were undoubtedly useful. Sir Alexander Cadogan (Britain) said: “We sometimes found ourselves in disagreement, but I believe we disagreed amiably and reasonably. Each of us at some time was in opposition to the other two delegations, but even if we considered the views of the other two peculiar we recognised they were sincerely held and therefore were worthy of respect. I believe this is a good augurv for the future.”
