TONIGHT’S PROGRAMMES

REGENT THEATRE “What a Woman” is a sprakling romantic comedy, with intriguing situations and witty dialogue, and the audience finds it all very amusing. Rosalind Russell and Brian Aherne, who were so successful in “My Sister Eileen.’ ’are again associated, and with the assistance of other clever players keep the fun and excitement going at a fast pace. Entertaining “shorts” and the latest war news by air mall are also screened. ROXY THEATRE Two films in technicolour are included in the current programme. "Du Barry was a Lady” is a very amusing comedy, in which Red Skelton in a dream is transported into the past and has some exciting and very funny adventures. Lucille Ball. Gene Kelly and “Rags” Ragland are prominent in the cast. “White Savage” is a tropical romance. featuring Maria Montey, Sabu and Jon Hall. THEATRE ROYAL One of the most thrilling stories of the war is told in "Corregidor,” which pays tribute to the men who made a gallant stand against terrible odds. They faced untold hardship and won an imperishable name. The cast is headed by Otto Kruger, rHissa Landi, Donald Woods and Frank Jenks. “Good Luck, Mr Yates,” is another exciting drama, featuring Claire Trevor and Edgar Buchanan. A chapter of the serial, "The Flying Cadets,” is also screened. CIVIC THEATRE “Captains of the Clouds," is a thrilling story of the air, the effect of which is heightened by the fact that the film is in technicolour. It' is particularly appropriate that the film should be screened during Air Force Week. Popular James Cagney gives a fine perrormance in the leading role and gets splendid support from Brenda Marshall and Dennis Morgan. Members of the Royal Canadian Air Force are seen in some of the scenes. There are some interesting and entertaining “shorts.” STATE THEATRE “Taxi, Mister,’ ’is a rollicking comedy that keeps an audience chuckling. William Bendix and Grace Bradley head the strong cast. “Riders of the Deadline” is one of the popular Hopalong Cassidy stories, with plenty of action in the great outdoors. William Boyd is again Hopalong Cassidy. A chapter of the thrilling serial, “The Iron Claw,” is also screened. VERSE SPEAKING RECITAL Classical and modem verse will be presented in Torak Hall on Monday night by the verse-speaking choirs of St. Andrew’s Girls’ Club (senior) and Hillcrest School (junior, under the direction of Mrs V. Linder. Songs will be sung by Mr Keith Priscott, and a musical background will be provided by Mr Stanley James and Mr H. Larsen. “THEY CAME TO A CITY” Much interest is being taken in the production of J. R. Priestley’s striking play, “They Came to a City,” at the State Theatre next Wednesday and Thursday nights by the Hamilton People’s Theatre, and the season promises to be a great success. In his play Priestley peoples his stage with widely-contrasting types, who demonstrate the difficulties that lie ahead for the social reformer, and in an atmosphere at once fantastic and concrete points his moral and reveals his hopes for the future. A strong cast is engaged, and there will be striking lighting effects.

SUNDAY NIGHT CONCERT The concert to be given in the State Theatre on Sunday night, October 1, should make a wide appeal, for the proceeds will go towards providing Christmas comforts for the Makogai lepers. Patrons therefore will not only enjoy an excellent programme but will help a very worthy cause. The items cover a wide range, and some very talented performers will appear.
