SLUMS IN AUSTRALIA
NEED OF 257,521 HOUSES (Received Sept. 23, 2 p.m.) CANBERRA, Sept. 23 An official’ survey reveals that 82,031 dwellings in Australia are unfit for human habitation. A survey made by the Department of Post-war Reconstruction states that the worst slum problem is in New South Wales, were nearly 23,000 dwellings should be demolished. The total number of houses that Australia needs is 257,521, comprising 175,490 actually short and 82,031 unfit for habitation. A further 154,899 houses are under standard, though capable of being repaired and renovated.
