TO BE SHOT IN BACK LONDON, Sept. 21 The High Court sentenced Pietro Caruso, former Fascist police chief in Rome, to death. The court ordered him to be shot in the back. Caruso’s secretary, Roberto Occhieto. was sentenced to thrity years’ imprisonment. Both were charged with collaboration with the Germans and surrendering prisoners to German execution squads. Caruso's lawyer has presented a plea for remission of the death sentence to the Minister of Justice, who is expected to refuse. The Berlin radio, broadcasting the announcement from Mussolini’s headquarters, said that forty hostages will be shot in the event of the execution of Caruso.
