WEARY GERMAN SOLDIERS
MOST OF AACHEN DESTROYED LOSS OF NANCY ADMITTED (Received Sept. 21, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 20 Reuter’s correspondent with the First United States Army says that a middle-aged German who escaped to the Allied lines after 48 hours in "No Man’s Land” said that fourfifths of Aachen has been destroyed. He had seen thousands of members of the Wehrmacht reach Aachen weary and without equipment, after trudging from Mons and other sectors.
Thirty thousand people refused to obey orders to evacuate Aachen despite all threats. A Berlin High Command communique admits that Nancy has been lost.
