Pedigree bulls of the highest butterfat backing have always been used, including three in succession from the Kuku Stud of Messrs R. L. Horn and son, probably the foremost herd in New Zealand for type combined with production. The bulls now in use are from the O.K. Stud of Mr A. E. Watkins, of Takanini. O.K. Lord Chariot, by O.K. Challenge Boy from O.K. Tricks Charity, the dam of the highest priced female at the famous O.K. dispersal last year (O.K. Pal’s Charmine, 440gns.), O.K. Tricks Charity has a record of 7371 b. of fat, and her ancestry takes in such cows as Odd Trick (7271 b. of fat) and Jewel’s Mystery (with two records of 8091 b. and 8141 b. of fat). The junior sire is a son of the 1000-guinea bull Lobelia Falantine Sultan from a cow with a record of 6241 b. of fat as a three-year-old. Another bull used with splendid results was bred from the stock which produced Cousin Grace, with over 9001 b. of fat. This is a young herd that has been heavily culled.
