COMMENT ON RUNNING

(By “Martian”) Scram gave a dashing exhibition of Tencing to win the Melville Hack and Hunters’ Steeples, hitting the front at the outset and carrying on to outclass the opposition and win attractively, although she had to he kept right up to It to withstand the challenge of the Improving Jehangir, who finished in determined style to run the/winner to a couple of lengths. Skyette was going like a winner until the sod wall near the half-mile the second time, but from then on ne weakened, to be eventually beaten out of a place. Scram was followed early by Waiwalnul, Skyptte, Show Day, Tamaku, and Jehangir. Scram was still in charge as they raced over the double in front or tne stands, and he was Joined along the back by Skyette, this pair being clear of Jehangir, Black Musk. Walwainui, and Guard's Delight. Scram outjumped Skyette at the sod wall and carried on to lead into the straight from Jehangir, with Skyette In close attendance and Guard’s Delight and Rival in that order. Scram held on In the straight to beat Jehangir by a couple of lengths, with Guard’s Delight finishing on to cut Skyette out or third money. Rival was next, roiiowed by Waiwalnul, Black Musk and Lady Acushla. Wong Foo tell at the sod wall the first time round; The Dude came to grier at the next; Hunting Chief and Aintree sold out at the hencop and Preau Chevalier also fell. Gunman put an early break on the field in the first division of tne Otorohanga Hack Handicap, and staying on In improved style on this occasion, won by a length and a-balf from Century, to return double figures on the win machine. Strangely enough, he was fourth ravourlte to win and only sixteenth in order or betting on the place machine. Hunting l/>ch and Fox Spi were slow away, and Gunman was followed early by Justora, Century, Fox Rose, Duinbo and Mercurial. Racing to the halfmile Dumbo ran up behind Gunman, with Fox Rose handily placed and Mercurial, Century and Kitty Green next. Gunman was clear into the straight and be held on to gain the verdict by a length and a-balf over Century, wltn Dumbo a similar distance away. The unlucky Fox Spl was a commendable fourth, followed by Mercurial, Bettermusk, Tight Line and Kitty Green.

Tue second division resulted In a convincing victory for the win favourite, Altess, who after being handily placed throughout, caine right away at the distance to register an effortless win. Tavernslde was prominent as they settled down and led along the back from Altess, Ballynokane, Tarzab and Haydilk. Ballynokane shot to the front at the half-mile and led into the straight from Princes* Dorla, Roman Orator, Altess and liayuuK. Altess hit the rront at the distance, and at the end shot out to win by two lengths from Irish Fox, who came home well to beat Tarzah by a length. Mr Rowl was rourth, and then followed Ballynokane and Valley Boy. Erndale made an auspicious return to hurdling when he finished solidly to overhaul the unlucky Gold Cape In the Hamilton Hurdles. The latter hut for a faulty jump at the Tence by the 6 furlong post and a bad one at the last, which probably cost him a couple or lengths, would no doubt have turned the tables on the favourite. Stock Exchange went a good race, but Sir .Grant stopped towards the close after always being within striking distance. Early Sir Grant set the pace and was followed over the first rence by Besiege, Prince Rewa, Transmitter, Stock Exchange and Hunting Mac. Racing past the stands, Hunting .Mac was right behind Sir Grant with Besiege lying third in front or Stock Exchange, Prince Rewa, Varuna, Gold Cape and Our Nation, Erndale and Transmitter bringing up the rea# at this stage. Hunting Mac and Stock Exchange ran past Sir Grant along the hack and as they turned for home there was little between Stock Exchange, Sir Grant, Gold Cape and Hunting Mac. Gold Cape blundered at the last and Erndale finishing on got up to shade him by a head. Stock Exchange was half a length away third in front of Wildore, with Sir GranT, Besiege, Our Nation, Hunting Mac, Varuna, Hunto, Prince Kewa and Transmitter ia that order. Tweedamuir’a Good Performance Twedesmuir, who won impressively here in the spring, gave another solid performance when he finished on to win the President’s Handicap rrom Constitution and Marble Fox. Air Port, after being within striking distance throughout, was only a moderate fourth. Billy Peach was first to break the line and led past the stands rrom Skydonna, Constitution, Air Port, Tweedsmuir, Kinsman, Jolly Fox, Nfght Comedy and Prince Baffles. Racing into the hack there was little alteration, Billy Peach being roiiowed at the sixth by Skvdonna, Constitution, Tweedsmuir, Air Port, Prince Baffl.-s, Kinsman, JuJiv Pox, Night Comedy, Marble Fox and Balblair. The order was .unchanged along the top Billy Peach leading to the turn from Skydoiina, Constitution and Tweedsmuir, with Air Port handiest of the others. Inside the di>tance, Twedesmuir asserted himseir and went on to beat Constitution bv two lengths, with Marble Fox right up third, and Air Port fourth. Then came Skydonna, Kinsman, Btliy Peach and \nrnt Comedy. . * * Abbey Lu, who had been schooling well at Te Rapa over the past several weeks and who won at his last start at Eiierslie, gave a polished exhibition of retiring to win the Tp Rapa steeplechase ana mcidmially thereby increase ms circle of admirers for Great Northern honours at EUerslle next month. The finish was a spectacular one, Abbey Lu*. Joining issue with surpeen three furlongs rrom home and fighting out the issue stride by stride rrom then until the last 50 yards or so when Abbey Lu wore down hla adversary
