NEW ZEALAND AIRMAN

POLAND’S VICTORIA CROSS (Special Correspondent) LONDON, Jan. 12 Poland’s Victoria Cross—the Virtuti Militari or Silver Cross, which is the highest military award a Pole can win—has been awarded to WingCommander A. H. C. Boxer, of Hast- | ings. No account of how Wing-Com-mander Boxer won the award can be given until after the war. He won Vie Distinguished Flying Cross last March, the citation stating that he carried out several long-range sorties. Once, when he was hundreds of miles from base, one of the engines of his plane failed, but he 'reached base safely. Some time later he completed a return flight from a distant target under similar circumstances. He is a most reliable and determined pilot. Wing-Commander Boxer was edu- . cated at Nelson College. He was commissioned in 1939. He married an assistant section officer, Miss Pamela Sword, a W.A.A.F., in November, 1941.
