SHEARINQ RECORD
417 IN NINE HOURS In every shearing shed in the Dominion arguments arise as to the record number of sheep shorn in one day, and when the figures quoted reach 380 or even 400 names are quoted and hours of work compared. Recognised by most people as the best performance in New Zealand was that of Mr P. de Malmanche, who sheared 412 sheep in ten hours in South Taranaki in 1933, beating the existing record of 406 sheep in the same time. A new world record is now claimed on behalf of Mr Henry Thomas Tuwhangai, of Kawhia district, who sheared 417 ewes in nine working hours on the farm of Mr H. Robinson, Putaruru, on Tuesday of this week. The record was established under the supervision of Mr A. R. Vosper, J.P. As the average experienced shearer can shear about 220 sheep in a nine-hour working day the new figures are remarkable.
