OBITUARY

MR A. L. FRASER The death has occurred at Hanfllton of Mr Archer Lovat Fraser, of Kawhia, engineer to the Kawhia County Council for the past 18 years. Born at Manaia 60 years ago, and educated at Pahiatua, where his father, the late Mr De Gennes Fraser, was county engineer from 1888 to 1898, he followed his father’s profession, and was appointed to the Kawhia position in the days when that county had very few miles of metalled road and few of the bridges j that were so necessary for the de- j velopment of the area. Mr Fraser : readily gave his advice and practical j knowledge in fostering any move- 1 ment for the advancement of the | Katvhia district. He is survived by ; his wife and a family of three, Mrs | W. Manson (Rotorua), Mrs W. Dow- j ney <Kaikope) and Mr H. Fraser | (Rotorua). I described as a “wind funnel” in the < Hinuera district where ragwort seed was; a menace. "Many farmers merely clear the pad- : docks that can be seen from the road,” commented a councillor. Mr P. Dee said there was less ragwort in the Te Poi district this year than for j several years, but there were two or' three small patches that were prolific and j menacing other lands. It was property easily controlled. When the inspector remarked that two i settlers had asked for liberation of cinnabar moths next spring, comment was made; “It is fatal when they get that idea; it is necessary to supplement the work of the caterpillar by the efforts of the farmers themselves.”
