EVACUATED BV GERMANS LONDON. Sept. 28 In Corsica the Germans have evacuated Aleria, on the east coast forty miles south of Bastia. This means that all that they hold of Corsica is a stretch of coast some forty miles long, varying in width from a few miles to twenty miles. HANOVER BOMBED LONDON, Sept. 28 Last night’s attack on Hanover was made in bad weather over the North Sea, but over the target visibility was good and the crews were able to pick out objectives clearly. The Germans put up a strong defence and fighters were met by the bombers as soon as they were over enemy territory. Over Hanover flak was heavy, but it either wilted under the bombing or was withheld to leave the air clear for the fighters. The enemy dropped flares from a great height and. searchlights concentrated in a great cone. One pilot said he had never seen so many combats over a target area. Another force of bombers raided Emden, and Brunswick was also attacked. ART UNION WINNER NAPIER, Wednesday The winner of £2OOO in the art union, Mr Francis Norman Hunt, is a retired passenger foreman of the New Zealand Railways, aged 72. Three of his four sons are in the Army, one missing in Burma. Mr Hunt said he would give the prize away to have his boy brought home safe.
