E-BOATS HIT
NEW ZEALAND COMMANDER LONDON, Sept. 27 A group of E-boats was intercepted and engaged in the North Sea at close range and in bad visibility on Saturday by the corvette Puffin, commanded by Lieut.-Commander A. S. Miller, of Takapuna. The Eboats retired behind a smoke screen, but not before several shells found their mark. “The fight took place at top speed,” said Lieutenant-Commander Miller. “We managed to close to short range and to keep up a heavy barrage of fire. The enemy was concentrating on eluding us and made little reply. Although the enemy made as much use as possible of his smoke screen, we saw him in the light of our star-shells and appeared to score several hits, but it was not possible to observe the results.
