WARSHIPS AND TANKS
ATTACK AGAINSI NAPLES LONDON, Sept. 28 The Vichy radio says the Fifth Army is throwing in tanks in support of a strong attack launched against Naples. According to Berlin reports Allied ■warships moved yesterday from Salema Bay to the Gulf of Naples and are shelling the enemy on land. The Morocco radio says the Allies, in a sudden thrust supported by tanks, have stormed important enemy positions north of Salerno. Allied forces last night were less than 20 miles from Naples. Kessel-T'-g's army, while trying to hold up General Montgomery's troops in the approaches to Naples, is withdrawing rapidly along the rest of its line.
The British United Press correspondent points out that the Fifth Army’s thrust up the Sele Valley is within a few miles of the railway, from Avellino to Foggia, which the enemy probably has been using to switch troops from one sector to the other. He says the Germans have been forced to pull back their whole line by the double threat from the Eighth Army and the right wing of the Fifth Army.
