DELAYED RESULT

GENERAL ELECTION VOTES FROM OVERSEAS - • CLOSE POSITION IN OAMARU (By Telpyranti—Press Assorlatlon) WELLINGTON, Tuesday Although election results are still coming in from overseas and will continue to do so for some time, there was no alteration reported today for the electorates where the voting is close and no material alteration in any of the other electorates. It is impossible to say yet when all election returns will be completed, but because of the forces voting it will be some time. Figures published so far represent counts in New Zealand, and include some, but not all, of the forces votes. Still to come are the rest of the forces’ votes from many parts of the world and from ships at sea. as well as absent, postal, declaration and seamen’s votes in New Zealand. The final count of votes lodged in New Zealand should be completed next week, the chief electoral officer, Mr L. Irwin, said today, but the final result of the voting of the forces overseas would probably not be known until later than that. On account of late returns of service votes, the following amendments have been made in electorates where the majorities are comparatively slender:— OAMARU T. R. Beatty (N.) .. 4601 Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer (L.) 4597 G. Barclay (D.L.) .. 319 G. P. Curtiss (P.M.) .. 154 Majority for Beatty •. 4 EDEN W. T. Anderton (L.) .. 6656 W. H. Fortune (N.) .. 6558 T. M. Nixon (D.L.) .. 669 Mrs G. Brooks (R.D M.) .. 285 D. H. C. Wilson (P.M.) .. 181 Majority for Anderton 98 RAGLAN R. Coulter (L.) .. .. 4427 R. J. Glasgow (N.) 4375 A. Dillon (D.L.) .. .. 257 S. Smithson (P.M.) .. 113 Majority for Roberts .. 87 There are 449 absentee and 82 postal votes to be counted in Wairarapa. In Waitemata the majority of Mr H. T. Morton (N.) over Mrs M. M. Dreaver (L.) has been reduced from 127 to 121 votes. RESTORATION ISSUE INVERCARGILL POSITION (By Telegraph—Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Monday The number of votes still to be counted in the poll on the local liquor question in Invercargill is 2600. In addition to postal votes and absentee votes, there are 1413 soldiers’ votes still to be counted. If restoration is to be carried, about 2000 of the 2600 votes will have to be in favour of that issue. At present, restoration is 561 short of a three-fifths majority. The result of the soldiers’ votes on the liquor question has not yet been received from Wellington. Absentee and postal votes will be dealt with during the official count and included in the final totals. The results of the official count should be known about the end of the week.
