ALLIED PLANS READY

GREAT NEED OF WEAPONS

(United Pre Assn.—Ele-*. Tel. Copyright) WASHINGTON, Gept. 23.

The Allies are ready to open big offensives in Italy, Burma and China,

said General George C'. Marshall, Chief of Staff, United States Army, who is reported to have been selected as Allied Commander-in-Chief.

While total victory was in sight, it could only be won by the concentration of every resource to the task, said General Marshall. The offen-

sive was already beginning toward Naples and Rome, while in Burma and the Chinese theatre the Allies were getting into position to carry heavy fighting to the Japanese. In fact, for the first time since the war started, we were ready to deploy the tremendous United States Army. The Allies lately had been successful. but he warned people not to be lulled into a false sense of security by initial successes. Losses of every conceivable type of military equipment through enemy action and other hazards surpassed any in history. There would be no end to requirements for weapons until the last battle was won. The New York Herald-Tribune states on excellent authority that General Marshall is expected to be appointed British-American Gem alissimo by October 25 in personal charge of a trans-Channel invasion. General Eisenhower will probably be appointed chief of staff.
