ETON COLLEGE BOYS
WEAR SECOND-HAND CLOTHES LONDON, Sept. 24 Most of the 1060 boys at Eton College today are wearing secondhand clothes, boots and top-hats, and hundreds are even making their own white ties from paper. The Daily Mail’s correspondent says: “I have seen sights at Eton that would have horrified pre-war Etonians—boys with patches on the seats of their striped trousers and hobnails on their shoes.’’ These fantastic changes in Eton’s sartorial appearance, hitherto the very pattern of dignity, are the result of clothing rationing, which is seriously affecting all public schools. A large number of Etonians just starting their first term come equipped with their elder brolhers’ discarded clothes, boots and tep-hats.
