HARBOUR BOARD CASE There were 100 electors present at Orini when Mr A. S. Sutherland continued his campaign as National candidate for Haut’aki. Mr Sutherland received a vote of thanks and confidence. As chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board Mr Sutherland gave details of the union claims for treble pay for Sunday work, saying that in the case of the Auckland Board the claim was for boatmen, who had been satisfied with the existing system under which they were merely on call on Sundays. The union’s demand resulted in bills being received by harbour boards in New Zealand for many thousands of pounds. The boards had contested the claim, and the result was the amendment to the Arbitration Act passed in the dying hours of Parliament. Criticising the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Act, Mr Sutherland said the Government had all the machinery it required for the taking of land before the Act came into operation.
