MAIL FOR TROOPS
RECORD CONSIGNMENT (N.Z.E.F. Official News Service) CAIRO, Sept. 2 For three days sorting went on i with 24-hour shifts to clear for de- : livery to units a record letter mail \ for New Zealand soldiers serving in j the Middle East which arrived at the ! Base Post Office, Cairo, during the j week. The bags contained 600,000 ; letters. In addition, there were 3500 ; bags containing 40,000 parcels, 500 i bags of newspapers and 7000 to- . bacco parcels. The largest number of parcels re- | ceived in one mail was in November 1 last year, when 176,000 arrived from ! New Zealand for delivery to troops prior to Christmas. The total number , of parcels distributed in the field throughout the year was 540.673. Although the airgraph service was ! inaugurated only four months ago, over 100,000 airgraphs have been despatched by soldiers to the Dominion, while 70,000 have been received by the troops from home.
