POWER SHORTAGE
MISSION TO GO ABROAD LARGE EXPANSION’ PLANNED (By Telegraph—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Tuesday A repre itative of electric power boards and a Government representative are to be appointed to visit the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada to investigate the latest developments in producing and distributing electric energy, stated the Hon. W. Nash today. The electric power position was serious, he said, and the mission would report to the Government on the quantity of plant and equipment available for purchase, which would fit in with the Government's programme of immediate and maximum expansion of the power supply. The Minister emphasised the need for greater production of power both for war and post-war needs. The construction of thousands of houses and industrial development would create a great additional demand. The Government was willing to consider any proposals for small plants —hydro, oil or other source of power —which would provide electricity at reasonable rates. The mission must leave New Zealand at the earliest possible moment.
