CRITICISM OF SCHEME
LOWERING LAKE KIMIHIA The recent statement by the Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb, that it was proposed to drain Lake Kimihia and develop an open-face quarry for good quality coal in the lake bed was not viewed favourably by a resident of Huntly In conversation with a Waikato Times representative yesterday. He said that when the lake-bed was dried out there would still be 60 to 80 feet of soil and rock to be removed before the coal measures could be reached. He added that if the Minister was so keen on this sort of coalmining it was strange that he had not long ago developed an almost identical deposit west of the Waikato River, where draining a lake-bed would leave only about 30ft. of soil and rock above the coal.
