LOWEST PERCENTAGE

RETAIL PRICE INCREASES (By Telegraph—-Press Association) WELLINGTON, Tuesday New Zealand heads the list for the lowest increase cost of war, said the Minister of Supply, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, today. This statement had been repeated several times, he said, but was confirmed by a telegram he had received this week from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, Mr W. J. Jordan. This read as follows: “The British Ministry of Labour Gazette for June and July 1943, publishes the following figures as percentages of increases in the retail prices from August, 1939, to the latest date available: New Zealand 13.4, Canada 16.7, Australia, 22.4, United States 22.6, South Africa 23.5, United Kingdom 29, Sweden 42, Eire 59, Portugal 59.6, India (Bombay) 95.2.” “I think it will be realised,” added the Minister, “that this authentic information emphasises the efficiency and effectiveness of the price control and economic stabilisation policies which have been enforced by the Government since the outbreak of war.”
