10,000 PRISONERS

PANTELLARIA BATTERED LONDON, June 12 More than 10,000 Italians have beeq taken prisoner on Panteliaria. Of this number 3000 already are on their way to the North African mainland. A British division, including many Dunkirk veterans, has landed on the island. The landing troops had difficulty in distinguishing the Italian of! cers among the masses of troops surrendering. Apparently there are no Germans among the prisoners. A soldier said the damage done by the air bombardment was the worst he had ever seen. The forts received direct hits which smashed right through the cement and the coastal guns were demolished. There were only a few casualties among the civilians, who lived day and night in shelters in the rock.
