FURIOUS FIGHTING

CHUNGKING, April 9 In a furious engagement raging over 10 days in the south-west Shansi Province crack Chinese troops fecaptured a strategically important hill which had been lost in hand-to-hand fighting with several thousand Japanese, supported by planes and tanks. Another height which the Japanese endeavoured to capture with over 1000 troops changed hands seven times in one day. Finally the Chinese flag waved over the summit. Three or four hundred Japanese were killed or wounded in this battle. Flying-Officer Eric Grant, captain iof the Royal New Zealand Air 1 Force Rugby team, who is playing j for Scotland in a series of Rugby I matches, appeared in a Scottish trial I match this season. He takes the 1 place in the centre of the Glasgow | captain, W. H. Munro, who is suffering from an injured knee.
