MAJOR’S GALLANT ACTION (I'niteii Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received March 10, noon) LONDON, March 9. The Victoria Cross has been awarded posthumously to Major J. W. Le Patourel, of the Hampshire Regiment, for conspicuous gallantry in action in the Terburba area oh December 3. Major Le Patourel personally led four volunteers against an enemy post on a high position. When the others were killed he went forward alone with a pistol and grenades and engaged the enemy machine-guns at close quarters. He did not return. A later message stated: A special War Office statement says it has been learned that Major le Patrouel is not dead but is a prisoner of war in Italy.
