WAR SAVINGS

STAMP SALES BRING £IOO POOR RESPONSE The receipts from the sale of national savings stamps up to February 28 since the inception of the campaign 32 weeks ago total £IOO, which gives an average of £3 2s 6d a week, or £1 5s at each of the 80 shops the proprietors of which undertook to assist with the sale of stamps. It is hoped that the above figures will cause the # public to realise that their response is poor indeed when compared with the total of 6000 householders in the borough and suburban areas of Hamilton. The value of the stamps sold gives an average of 4d per householder. If each householder were to purchase only one stamp each week the sales would total £l5O, which over a period of 32 weeks would produce £4700. That sum in comparison with the actual sales is a gauge of the people’s response to the efforts of the many shopkeepers who willingly undertook to place their shoos at the disposal of the Hamilton War Savings Committee in their drive to further the raising of money in every possible way. Universal Duty

It seems, the committee states, that the immunity from actual warfare has left the public devoid of the urge to back up their fighting forces by all the means at their disposal. It is everyone’s duty to back up the fighting forces by saving and lending, not for one week, but every week, until the victory desired by all is achieved by our fighting men and their allies. Therefore a further appeal is made by the committee, to everyone, no matter how slender their resources, to save and lend to the limit, by taking their change- in 6d national savings stamps, by the puschase of £l, £lO or £IOO National Savings Bonds, or by regular deposits to National Savings Accounts. The chairman of the committee, on behalf of the members, expressed appreciation of the help given by the many people who are doing their utmost to assist their country by regular and increased investments, which he stated should be an incentive to everyone.
