STAG TROPHY

ARMY AGAIN SUCCESSFUL OUD BOYS BEATS AIR FORCE | Army defeated Technical Old Boys by 6 i Points to 0 and Old Boys beat Air Force by 16 points to 3 in the second round of ! the Stag Trophy Rugby competition at Rugby Park on Saturday. In the curtainraisers High School beat City by 26 points to 0 and Technical School beat Technical Old Boys by 30 points to 6. Army turned the tables on Technical Old Boys, as the latter won by 11 points to 5 tn their last engagement. Army appeared the fitter side and possessed a fast threequarter line, with the former representative player Everest as centre. However, i the Army handling did not match that of Technical Old Boys. The At my forwards j were heavier and consequently mastered most of the set scrums, but the Technical Old Boys forwards, led by Satherley. were faster in the loose and co-operated with their backs more than the service team’s pack. Technical Old Boys was unfortunate on several occasions when the backs moved, for at the last minute a pass would go astray or a man would be tackled. During most of the first half Army kept hammering at Technical Old Boys’ line. Fast rushes by the Technical forwards brought the play into Army territory on several occasions but Army backs proved strong defenders, especially the full-back, whose line-kicking drew frequent applause. Awarded a set scrum in Army’s ground, the Technical Old Boys forwards hooked the ball and the backs were on the run. Griffiths, wing three-quarter, was tackled and forced out three yards from the line. Interception Brings Try A fast interception by Everest on the half-way line opened a rush into Technical Old Boys’ twenty-five and Everest passed to the wing, Irwin, who scored in the corner. The try was not converted. At half-time the score was 3—o in Army’s favour. 1 For a late tackle about the half-way line Army was awarded a penalty kick, which succeeded, bringing the score to 6—o. ‘ Serancke gave some good exhibitions of safe kicking and relieved some awkward situations when Army was attacking. Army forwards secured the ball from the line-outs more often than the Technical Old Boys men, and after putting the ball at their feet the winning forwards made some fast dribbling rushes. Army maintained the attack until the end and Technical Old Boys had little opportunity to break through. On one occasion, howi ever, when a long line kick had put , ‘Technical Old Boys in Army territory the Technical half smartly intercepted an . Army pass. It. seemed as though Techni- . cal Old Boys would score but a knock-on \ occurred near the line. The referee was Lieutenant D. S. B. ! Heather. Air Force was beaten by 13 points in a ‘ hard game on No. 2 ground. At half-time ' the score was B—3 in old Boys’ favour and . at the final whistle Old Boys led by 16—3. j The most outstanding'backs for Old Boys j were F. Fowler and W. Higginson.
