MATERIALS FOR WAR
CONSERVATION IN AMERIC A 'United Press A«sn.—Eire, Tei. copyright) WASHINGTON, May 22 In a joint statement today Messrs Nelson. Newhall, Eastman and Henderson said that rubber could not be spared for tyres for civilians in 194243. Mr Newhall expressed the opinion that 30,000 tons of synthetic rubber was the most that could be expected this year and 350.000 tons would be a miracle in 1943. but even so, all would be required for the war effort.
Messrs Newhall and Nelson revealed that nation-wide petrol rationing would be inaugurated as soon as practicable, and that the armed forces would want all the rubber procurable. Rubber conservation would shorten the war and reduce the number of lives lost on the battlefield. They said the construction of a pipeline from Texas to New York was definitely " out ” unless they were to give up ships, tanks, planes and bombs.
