PUBLIC OPINION

CURRENT VIEWPOINTS NAME FOR THE WAR (To the Editor) Sir,—President Roosevelt has made j an appeal to the public for a suitable name for the present war. Because it is not easy to discover a name to express all that the war means, there has apparently been very little response, so Mr Roosevelt has given an answer to his own question by suggesting the name “War of Survival.” This is not a bad attempt, but the writer suggests “War of Liberty” would be better, but even that is open to some objections. As the Waikato Times suggested, future history may wish to use a name for the war which will be acceptable in any country. Germany, for instance, or Italy, will never adopt “War of Liberty” or “War of Survival” for obvious reas • is. Therefore, in the , far distant future, if either of the suggested names is used among the United Nations the war will be known by another name by the present enemies of democracy unless—and this is the important proviso—unless this war does indeed bring a realisation to the common people in Axis as well as democratic countries that the conflict has “liberated” them or allowed them to “survive” as free men. For the purposes of the United Nations, who matter most when all is said and done, the writer suggests that “War of Liberty” is a suitable term.—l am, etc., LIBERATOR Hamilton, April 17.
