£400,000,000 IN AUSTRALIA i prc«s A*!>n, EK Tel. copyright) (Received April 20. 3.15 p.m.) CANBERRA, April 20 Australia will spend £400,000,000 in the year ending June 30, according to an announcement by the Treasurer, when appealing in a broadcast for an intensified savings campaign. This is four times more than peace-time spending and the burden will grow as the job grows harder. “More men and women are employed and generally are earning higher wages than ever, but it would be stupid folly to go on spending incomes,” said the Treasurer. “Everyone is contributing to the Government by taxation and savings but it is necessary greatly to increase contributions and reduce the living standard to the barest essentials.”
