FAILURE TO REPORT
THREE MEN IMPRISONED (By Telegraph.—Press Association) DARGAVILLE, Friday Three cases of single men failing to report to the Army office at Dargaville when ordered were dealt with by Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court today. David Erceg, of Te Kopuru, pleaded not guilty. He said he had always tried to obey his mother, who on the date when he was instructed to report was away from home ill. She Tiad not wished him to report. StafT-Sergeant Boyle, for the Army, said he had tried to persuade Erceg to report. Mr Ferner: “I am not satisfied. I think you are a dodger.” George Arnerich, of Ruawai, and Arthur Reeves Palmer, of Naumai, stated that they had to choose between breaking the law and defying God. They declined to plead. All three were given a month’s hard labour, to be followed by detention in a defaulters’ camp.
