The submarine surfaced and fired | a torpedo, which missed. Expecting j an easy victim the submarine did i not dive and was therefore helpless | when the freighter swung round suddenly, ramming the U-boat. German sailors on the deck of the submarine screamed as they floundered in the water. Almost instantly there was a loud explosion astern, which the captain said “darn near stood the freighter on end.” The explosion did not injure the freighter but the collision smashed the prow and the forward hold took in water. At daylight United States destroyer came alongside.
