GREAT DARING

| BRITISH ACHIEVEMENT ROUT OF ITALIANS RETORT TO HITLER (omclal Wireless) 1 (Received March 27, 11 a.m.) RUGBY, March 26 ! Warm agreement is expressed by the British press with Mr Winston Churchill’s sentiment that all who took part in the brilliant action ■ which saved the Malta convoy were I entitled to the “compliments of the British nation.” i One naval commentator says: “No ttaval action of greater daring and audacity has taken place during the present war.” Speaking of the flight of superior : Italian forces before the British attack, the Daily Telegraph says: I “Such is the quality of the Fascist I navy. No doubt if II Duce is re- ' proached by the Fuehrer he may re- , tort that the battle of the Malta con- : voy was not much more ignominious j than the action of the Graf Spee.” U=BOAT SUNK RAMMED BY FREIGHTER (United Press Assn.—Elec Tei. copyright) (Received March 27, 12.5 p.m. NEW ORLEANS, March 26 Navy officials disclosed how an unarmed freighter sank a Nazi submarine by swiftly manoeuvering. The submarine surfaced and fired | a torpedo, which missed. Expecting j an easy victim the submarine did i not dive and was therefore helpless | when the freighter swung round suddenly, ramming the U-boat. German sailors on the deck of the submarine screamed as they floundered in the water. Almost instantly there was a loud explosion astern, which the captain said “darn near stood the freighter on end.” The explosion did not injure the freighter but the collision smashed the prow and the forward hold took in water. At daylight United States destroyer came alongside.
