SHELLING OF COAST

SEARCH FOR SUBMARINE

(United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. copyright) WASHINGTON, Feb. 24

Details of the shelling by a Japanese submarine oil the Californian coast eight miles north of Santa Barbara indicate that the attack was directed at the Bankline oil refinery, 25 rounds of sin. shells being fired. The damage was slight and there were no casualties. Aircraft and surface vessels are searching for the submarine.

The entire area south to the border of Mexico was immediately blacked out. Since the attack occurred during President Roosevelt’s speech it was apparently designed as an impudent gesture. Talking to journalists, President Roosevelt described the submarine shelling of the refinery last night during his radio speech as an excellent example of political warfare, but pointed out that it might react in the opposite way to which it was intended.
