PUBLIC’S SAFETY
TUNNEL SHELTERS WELLINGTON PROGRAMME (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Friday Provided the required labour is available, work will begin on Monday on the air raid shelter programme for Wellington to provide accommodation for 15,000 people, a total which will be later increased. The programme includes three tunnel shelter systems, the first in Hobson Street gully, the second under Mount Cook near the Carillon, and the third off Hospital Road in Newtown. The tunnels will be constructed to provide for the segregation of people in small parties in bays off the main tunnel lines. The scheme further includes surface shelters to be built with the newest type of concrete blocks. Architects were also today instructed to prepare plans for shelters in several corporation buildings. CHRISTCHURCH PRECAUTIONS CHRISTCHURCH, Friday Digging of air raid shelter trenches in the central area of Christchurch has been completed, although covering and other work remain to be done. The Mayor and Chief Warden, Mr E. H. Andrews, said the trenches would accommodate about 12,000 persons, and he considered that that would be quite enough.
