PUBLIC OPINION
CURRENT VIEWPOINTS STREET IMPROVEMENTS (To the Editor) Sir.—l think. like “Ratepayer” in his letter of December 5. we in Nixon ‘ Street have just cause lor complaint, too. Clarence Street residents are lucky to have their street tar-sealed from kerb to kerb, and Grey Street residents are also to be envied, if they have only a tar-sealed strip in the middle. I believe Nixon Street was one of the first streets to be built on, and now that almost every section is built on the time is long overdue for some improvements, as J the Borough Council must be coli lecting a large amount «of rates and 1 spending it in other ways and places, j About three years ago kerbing and channelling were taken in hand and we were led to expect at least a tarsealed footpath. Rough sand was put on but was so unpleasant to walk on that most people, especially the mothers with prams, used the street in preference. Eventually the sand was shovelled off again. We noticed the day before the municipal elections Albert Street as far as Nixon Street was tar-sealed. Firth Street also was tar-sealed about 18 months ago, and it doesn’t carry a third of ! the traffic that Nixon Street does. ! Owing to the moist spring we have j had. the dust nuisance has not been ‘ so bad, but as soon as the hot, dry weather comes, clouds of dust fly with every vehicle that passes. One has either to keep windows and doors closed or be prepared to sweep and dust far more than the fortunate people in tar-sealed streets. Then again the paspalum will be seeding in a few weeks’ time and in places it meets across the foot-track and ruins precious stockings and dresses. Nixon Street is another orphan, and has to wait while other streets are re-tarsealed. —I am, etc., ANOTHER RATEPAYER, j Hamilton, Dec. o.
