NAVAL LOSS OFF MALAYA
ATTACK BY JAPANESE PLANES
DIRECT HITS OBTAINED - HEAVY CASUALTIES

LONDON, Dec. 10
It is announced from Singapore that Admiral Sir Tom Phillips, newly-appointed Commander-in-Chief, British Far Eastern Fleet, sailed with the battleship Prince of alpj, which has been lost off Malaya. The number of casualties caused by the loss of this battleship and also the battlecruiser Repulse is not available, but it is feared they may be hia\y. The loss of the two ships was announced by the Prime Minister, Mr Winston Churchill, in the House of Commons todav.
A Tokio message says that both ships were sunk by Japanese planes. The warships were first sighted by a Japanese air squadron at 11.30 this morning and were immediately attacked, says Tokio. A direct hit was obtained on the Repulse and she heeled over and sank.
A direct hit was later scored on the Prince of Wales. The battleship made off at full speed, but was pursued and further hits were registered. The Prince of Wales sank at 2.50 this afternoon following a series of explosions.
